Family Taxodiaceae Distribution Area at 50 ~ 1800 meters abovesea level
Characteristics It belongs to evergreen large arbor with straight trunk and cracked bark. Its external bark is brownish in color, and internal bark red. It is about 18 meters tall. The leaves in linear conifers are grown in two columns in spiral direction. The leaf edges are in sawtooth shape. Its flower is unisexual, but the tree is monoecist. The fruit is an oblong cone with a short stem. The seeds are grown downward.
Purposes The trunk is hard and delicate. Itcan be used as the materials for construction, utencils or coffin.
Reproduction By seeds or regrowing of sprouted branch.
Afforestation Period February to April in Central and North Taiwan, and the rainy season in June and July in South Taiwan.
Plantation Volume 2000 trees. Rowspacing: 2.2m !N 2.2m on the flat land and 2m !N 2mon the slopes
Notes of Plantation Raise the naked-root seedling. When a seedling is 30cm tall, it is trimmed and grown on a depression at 40cm wide and 30cm deep. China fir is grown in places with warm temperature, rainy and fertile land. Avoid growing it in dry land. In the first and second year, mowing has to be done thrice every year.If one seedling dies, a new one should be grown immediately. In the following years, the number ofmowing times is adjusted according to the growingsituation. After growing for 6 years, branch trimming is required. Short-term growing of agricultural products in the first 3 years can decrease the wood tending and management fees

Formal Name Liquidambar formosana Hance. Other Name Leafy China Fir
Family Hamamelidaceae, Liquidambar Distribution By seeds
Characteristics It belongs to large deciduous arbor. The leaf has long petiole, and is split into 3 or 5 blades. The leaf edges have large but fine sawtooths with pointed ends. Its flower is unisexual, but the tree is monoecist. Its fruit is just like a thorny ball with a fine and long stem. When it is ripen, it turns black, and its seed is linear with thin wings. In autumn and winter, the leaves turn red. This is the greatest symbol of maple. In the flat land of Taiwan, the temperature of autumn and winter is not low enough so thatit is hard to see the red maple leaf scene, but the yellowish one. However, in the mountain area or other places with lower temperature, the reddishmaple forest is always the best scenic spot of the season.
Purposes The juice of maple trunk can be gathered to raise silkworm. The maple log can be used for construction, making box and cupboard, building ship, acting as decorative tree in garden, and cultivating mushroom by artificial reproduction.

* Tung Oil Tree
Formal Name Aleurites fordii Hemsl. Other Name 3-year tung tree, 100-year tung tree, tung tree
Family Euphorbiaceae, Vernicia Distribution Commonly grown in various places of Taiwan, and gradually domesticated.
Characteristics It belongs to small deciduous arbor. Its height can be about 15 meters. The leaves in oval orheart shape grow alternately. The leaves grown on the blossoming branch usually do not split, but those on the non-blossoming branch split. The petiole is quite long. Tung oil tree blossoms between spring and summer. It is monoecist. The flowers are arranged in a circular cone. The calyx is in column shape and in the color of green. The corollla is in white. Each flower carries 5 petals.The seeded fruit is in ball shape with pointed end at the top, and its skin is smooth.
Purposes The seed can be squeezed to give oil, which is good for manufacturing the materials of paint and oil ink etc. Tung oil can also act as a medicine for detumescence and depoisoning. The soft white log is good for making box, bed plate and furniture.
Poisonous part seed
Poisoning Syndrome Tung oil seed contains poisonous protein and saponins. Mis-usage of the seed will suffer from serious bellyache, vomiting, diarrhea, and slight coma

Family Betulaceae, Alnus Distribution From riverside and pondside on flat land to highmountains at 3,000 meters
Characteristics It belongs to deciduous arbor, growing wildly in the mountain. Its leaf is oval and slender. Shallow sawteeth are found along the leaf edge. Its diameter is 80cm. The tree is tall and straight. The male tree can resist the dryness of land. Its root contains root nodule bacteria which can improve the quality of soil. Its monoecist flowers are in dark purple, and the male ones are grown in a cluster. The oblong fruit looks like a pine fruit. When freshly chopped, the subeyuh log is in white, but turns to be light reddish brown after staying in the air for some time. The wood lines are straight and the wood texture is rather delicate. The growth rings are clear and distanced. The logmaterial has many diffusing pores which densely and evenly spread all over the trunk.
Purposes Both the fruit and bark can be used as the dyeingmaterial for construction, making utensil and box, casting, plate making and papermaking etc. The afforestation of subeyuh can be carried out in theuncultivated land

Family Sterculiaceae, Firmiana Distribution Various places of Taiwan, Japan, Philippines
Characteristics Itbelongs to deciduous arbor. Its bark is flat andsmooth, and its branch is grown in ringed shape.It has a straight trunk. Its broad leaf has a long petiole. The veins of leaf are dense and covered with soft hair. The flowers are arranged in a cluster. In summer, small yellow flowers are grown. They are monoecist. The fruit membrane crackscompletely. Every fruit blade has 3 ~ 5 seeds. Wrinkles can be found on the seed which is as small as a pea.
Purposes The log can be used formaking musical instrument or furniture. The barkcan be used for making paper and rope. And the seed is edible, and can be squeezed to give oil.

* Sweet Bamboo
Formal Name Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro Other Name  
Family Gramineae, Neosinocalamus Distribution Various places of Taiwan
Characteristics It belongs to an evergreen arbor. It was originally grown in the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian of Mainland China. Its trunk is large, and its stem may reach 20 meters and above, and its diameter is more than 30cm. The broad and coniferous leaves are grown alternately. A leaf is about 30cm long. From March to April andfrom August to September, sweet bamboos are growncontinuously. The shell of sweet bamboo is in yellowish green, and has dark purple hair densely growing on it. When human skin contacts the fine hair, he/she will get swollen and itchy.
Purposes The young buds of the underground stem of sweetbamboo is useful. The period from July to September is the good timing to pick sweet bamboo. The first picking is called "first water bamboo," and the second picking is called "second water bamboo," so on so forth, until about the twelve times. After processing, it can turn into dried bamboo or sliced bamboo etc.
